Over 1.3k Appear for PhD Entrance Test at GU

Gujarat University (GU), Ahmedabad, successfully conducted its PhD entrance examination on Tuesday, witnessing participation from a large number of research aspirants across the state. The entrance test was held for more than 700 subjects and attracted over 1,300 candidates, reflecting strong interest in doctoral studies at the university.

According to official data, out of 1,443 registered applicants, as many as 1,317 candidates appeared for the examination, resulting in an impressive attendance rate of 91.26 per cent. University authorities also highlighted that women candidates constituted more than half of the total examinees, indicating growing female participation in higher research programmes.

The university is expected to release the provisional answer key within the next two days, while the final results are likely to be announced by the following week. Candidates have been advised to regularly check the official Gujarat University website for updates related to the answer key and result declaration.

While the examination generated considerable enthusiasm among aspirants, it also drew some criticism due to the university’s decision to close the entire campus for the duration of the test. The administration cited safety and logistical considerations as the reason for restricting campus access during the examination period.

Under the existing examination pattern, candidates were not permitted to take the question papers home, as Gujarat University does not maintain a fixed question bank. All answers had to be written directly on the provided question sheets. Additionally, except for medical subjects, the question papers were made available in the Gujarati language to ensure accessibility for local candidates.

It was also noted that no PhD entrance examination was conducted for certain disciplines, including journalism, Prakrit, and Urdu, due to the unavailability of eligible research supervisors in these subjects.
